Arts in the Park & Cafe Lunch
1st Saturday of every month
Saturday, February 4
10am – 4pm
Lunch in the SC Café
12 - 1:30 pm $7 pp
Residents, please pre-register for lunch!
“Village Arts in the Park” has become “Arts in the Park” and is now located in the Union Center Entrance the first Saturday of each and every month from October through April. The location change is part of their on-going effort to make this a convenient, welcoming Craft Sale.
The craft sale is growing. We are averaging between 20-30 booths with some very interesting and unique offerings. As marketing efforts improve and word gets out that this will happen the first Saturday of each month during our “high season” we fully expect to see more and more vendors participate.
To complement “Arts in the Park” the Lifestyle department began offering a $7 lunch in the Café between noon and 1:30pm. A typical menu for this event will be a sandwich, chips, side salad, dessert and beverage. Last month, 28 residents, vendors and shoppers enjoyed the lunch and we expect it will grow as word gets out. We do ask that residents PRE-REGISTER for the lunch so we are able to plan for enough food. There will be some guess work in planning for non-residents who stop by to shop and decide to enjoy lunch which is why we need residents to help us by registering ahead of time.
The next “Arts in the Park” is March 3! Mark your calendars now!

Volunteers Extraordinaire!
Remember the 80's TV show MacGyver where Richard Dean Anderson played Angus MacGyver, a different kind of hero: he didn't use weapons, and he was an expert at making complicated machines out of ordinary things. Well, Vicki D'Elia is our very own 21st Century female MacGyver! Her forte may not be machinery, but she really could survive in the desert for days with just a toothpick and a glue gun! Recently Vicki has put her talents to the task of developing ideas for a number of events including Del Webb Goes Pink, Caribbean Night, Halloween, USO Show and she is currently working diligently with eleven other devoted volunteers to ensure that "A Royal Affair" will provide a dazzling evening to those attending our New Year's Eve Party.
Vicki's enthusiasm and energy also spills over to her home. On any given day you can find her putting up a back splash, adding a light fixture, installing cabinets or painting a couple rooms! To most of us, that's a lot of work, but to Vicki, it's just Tuesday...
Thank you Vicki for being our MacGyver!

Meet Katharine Cooney!
Hello Sun City Anthem!
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Katharine Cooney and as of December 13th I am the new Fitness & Wellness Coordinator. I am very excited to join the Sun City Anthem at Merrill Ranch team.
Just a little about me, I completed a BA from Carroll College in Helena, MT majoring in both Chemistry and Health & Physical Education with a concentration in Community Health. I went on to become a Certified Health Education Specialist so that I could share my passion for health and wellness. I relocated to Arizona from Montana in the fall of 2010 and have greatly enjoyed the sunshine and the desert’s unique beauty.
If you are in the Union Center, please drop by and say “hello.” I am looking forward to meeting you.
Sincerely,
Katharine Cooney
FREE Fitness Equipment Orientations

Services
The Union Center offers a number of health and fitness services to its residents. Through the use of a well-trained professional staff the facility is able to provide services geared towards increasing overall health and wellness, as well as, increasing the quality of living experienced by many of our residents. These services range from areas of nutrition, health, fitness and much more; each specifically designed with the resident’s good health and happiness in mind.
Services Offered:
Health Checks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $2
• Our body constantly gives us signals designed to relay information on how it is coping with the tasks at hand, as well as, its daily responsibilities. It is only when we use this information that it can help us. Thus, the Union Center will be offering health checks by request at a very minimal price. These are not designed to circumvent seeing a physician; however, they can be used to more frequently track the body’s vital statistics. The health checks will include a measurement of current body weight and height, Body Mass Index calculation, waist-to-hip ratio calculation & the resting heart rate and blood pressure.

Health Assessments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$10
Heart Rate & Blood Pressure – are commonly used to determine if there are any underlying health issues which need to be addressed prior to starting an exercise program. Knowledge of such information allows you to maintain an optimum level of health and safety throughout your program.
Body Circumference – is a crucial factor in determining your general health and benchmarking your fitness progress. It is common for certain areas of the body to have varying levels of body fat. There are however, some areas where you do not want this fatty build up, due to the increased risk for heart disease it brings with it.
Body Composition – this includes measuring current height/weight and completing a 3-site skinfold test. The information derived from the aforementioned tests allows our staff to calculate your Body Mass Index, as well as, your Total Body Fat Percentage.
Health Risk Stratification – is the process of computing all the data from the above tests and assessing the health risks posed by any negative contributing factors. The stratifications are based on the national standards provided by the American College of Sports Medicine and are supported by virtually every other nationally recognized fitness organization. Health Risk Stratification will provide you with a snapshot of your overall health status.

Fitness Assessments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $10
Postural and movement analysis – this involves evaluating your posture and movement to determine if you have any muscular imbalances or special structural considerations that may impede your progress. This evaluation helps the trainer develop and customize your personal training program.
Cardiovascular - cardiovascular health is determined by calculating a resting heart rate, resting blood pressure, as well as an exercising heart rate in order to determine aerobic capacity, which will be measured using a 3-minute step or one-mile walk test. This information will help determine your progress as well as a starting point for your cardiovascular training.
Flexibility – the range of motion of the lower back and hamstrings will be measured using the modified sit-and-reach test. This information will be used in accordance with the postural assessment in order to determine muscular imbalances as well as to track progress. Together, we create a program that will improve quality of life through reduction of muscle tension and pain.
Muscular Endurance – will be measured using a standardized chest press and/ or abdominal curl-up activity. This will give direction in creating a personalized strength training program and allow us to track progress.
Muscular Strength – will be determined using a standardized One Repetition Max Chest Press and One Repetition Max Leg Press. The results from each of these will give us good indication of overall upper and lower body strength.

Combo Assessments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $15
Consist of both the Health Assessment and the Fitness Assessment. Allowing you to take a more in-depth look at where you stand in regards to your overall health and fitness. The combo assessment is the perfect selection for someone who has been previously inactive and is looking to get back into physical activity.

Fitness Tracking . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $75
Fitness Tracking is a program developed for sole implementation at the Sun City Anthem at Merrill Ranch Union Center . It is a comprehensive six-month program that enables our members to create a series of goals and then work diligently, with our help, to achieve them. Included in fitness tracking is:
Personalized Training Program (non-supervised) – will be designed to address specific needs as outlined by the member. Whether that goal be hiking the Grand Canyon in six months or simply being able to throw a baseball with the grandchildren, this personalized training program will be molded to fit each participant’s unique personality and style of training.
Health & Fitness Assessments – each participant will receive two free health and fitness assessments. The use of these tools will allow us to more accurately track training progression and health gains. This will be the means for benchmarking and continuing to work towards the ultimate goal; whatever that might be.
Monthly Program Revisions – Based on the information provided to us by the resident, as well as the resident’s vitals, the training program may be altered to either increase or decrease its intensity to better serve the needs of the participant. This will allow for optimization of time spent in the fitness facility.

One-on-One Nutritional Education . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $35
General Nutritional Knowledge - will be given to the resident. It is important to know the basic themes behind good nutrition and how those themes affect your health.
Tips for Healthier Shopping - it is crucial to understand what nutritional variables you should be examining when browsing the local grocery store. Tips that can help your shopping will make it easier to maintain a healthy diet program.
Tips for Healthier Restaurant Eating – how can we possible know if what a restaurant calls low-carb is actually low-carb? Therefore, we will also provide you with tips designed to make eating out a little healthier.
Nutritional Log – a daily log will also be provided so that you may track your daily caloric intake. Along with this log we will provide you with some public domain web addresses that can be used to calculate your caloric intake vs. caloric output.

This will be a great way for our residents to come and learn from trained professionals the most effective way to fend off an attacker.

December 2010
Our exercise routines are often the first casualty of the busy holiday season, and when combined with holiday eating festivals, weight gain is a predictable outcome. However, holiday weight gain can be minimized even if you can’t hit the gym this month. In regards to your diet, keep your meal portions sensible and choose low fat versions of your favorites whenever possible. For exercise options away from the gym, take a walk every day (around your neighborhood, at the mall) or do a 10‐minute strength routine at home. During December, drop by the personal trainer’s office (Tuesday/Thursday only) at the Union Center to receive your free 10‐minute walking and strength workout routines. Remember, you still have time to reach your 2010 health and fitness goals! So celebrate your health this holiday and season your life with a little movement (exercise) therapy!

Do you want to make your 2011 New Year’s health and fitness resolution(s) come true? Then make sure you tell someone (friend, spouse, trainer, exercise buddy) about your goal(s). Expressing your goals and desired outcomes to a trusted friend makes your goals REAL and this expression also helps you AFFIRM your resolve. Take this action a step further by asking your friend to be your accountability partner. Being accountable not only to yourself but also to another individual may transform your goals from a fantasy to a reality. Make your goals real! Be accountable!
March 2011
If you’ve been more active this New Year and mindful about meal quality and quantity and the scale is currently at a standstill, it may be time for you to mix up your physical training program. It’s likely your body has adapted to your current routine and it may need some tweaking to keep the scale moving downward. Here’s some ways you can mix it up: 1) Get outside! Your indoor cardio machines have their place, but walking outdoors allows you to mix it up (speed, intensity). Walk with a buddy or see how fast you can complete a trip around the block. 2) Pump iron! If you’ve been using resistance bands and light dumbbells for your weight training regimen, try using the circuit or cable machines at the gym to challenge your muscles. 3) Have fun and try something new! Challenge your body and refresh your exercise routine with something out of the ordinary: golf, pickle ball, tennis, ping pong, bocce ball, Zumba Gold, line dancing, horseshoes, swimming. Need some more ideas…visit with the trainer the next time you’re in the Union Center!
April 2011
Know your numbers! For successful weight loss and weight maintenance it is imperative that you are calorie wise. Do you know how many calories you need every day to maintain your weight? To lose weight? How many calories do you expend when you engage in any given exercise and/or physical activity? Did you know that when alcohol is consumed the body metabolizes alcohol before fat, protein and carbohydrate? Did you know that these numbers change as you age as a result of changing body composition? There are many metabolic calculators on-line that will help you determine your daily caloric needs and estimated energy expenditures. Got questions? Then visit the trainer’s office in April for a list of helpful links.
May 2011
Just move it! Your life and your health depend on this simple, motivational mantra. Did you know that sitting for longs periods of time has been classified as lethal activity? That’s what a recent New York Times article reported from its interview with physical activity researcher James Levine (Mayo Clinic-Rochester, MN). Similar research has been conducted by Marc Hamilton at the University of Missouri. The take home message from these important studies is simple: Keep Moving! If you want to burn fat and reduce the likelihood of weight gain, then move on purpose! If you must sit at a computer for many hours during the day, then incorporate ten minute ‘movement therapy’ breaks into every hour. This is how you’ll keep the fat burning hormones turned on. Sitting for more than an hour turns the hormones off and allows circulating blood sugar and fat to be stored in adipose tissue. Now get up and go…it will do your body good!
June 2011
Weight training jargon abounds in every gymnasium. But the basic foundation of strength training is quite simple: perform resistance exercises with enough weight to fatigue the target muscle(s) within a 30± second window. Depending on the muscle group being exercised, your current age and fitness level, it could take anywhere from 3 to 20 repetitions for you to exercise your muscle(s) to ‘failure’ (complete muscle fatigue). Multiple sets should be performed (1-4) to realize improvements in muscle strength, size and endurance. Are you new to weight training? Then choose a weight light enough for you to perform 1 to 2 sets of 15 to 20 repetitions. If you’re still hesitant to begin a strength training program, then visit the SCA fitness center and talk to your fitness and wellness director or trainer for more information.
July 2011
Sometimes you have go backward to move forward…in your fitness training that is! At the ACSM conference in Denver, Colorado last month, a study was presented that described the benefits of backwards movements (i.e., back-pedaling on the elliptical, stationary bicycles and even walking backwards on a treadmill) on participants with injured knees. Apparently, walking or moving backwards improved quadriceps and hamstrings strength of study participants while also boosting their aerobic capacity. Moving backwards may also improve your balance and flexibility. If you plan on walking backwards indoors or out, ensure your safety by practicing in an area free of tripping obstacles. If practicing on a treadmill, start at a very slow speed such as one mile per hour and make sure you have ready access to the emergency stop cable. As you become more proficient, you can increase the speed and incline.
August 2011
The brain, like your muscles, benefits from novel (i.e. challenging) activities and daily doses of aerobic exercise. For example, cardiovascular activity pumps more oxygen-rich blood to the brain and with that blood comes nutrients such as glucose, which fuels every cell in the brain; and cardio exercise also strengthens blood vessels and helps prevent illnesses that impair cognitive function. Additionally, while we may enjoy engaging in routine activities and behavior patterns, our brain actually prefers novelty and unexpected events. You can challenge yourself with brain games like Mah Jongg, Sudoku, crossword puzzles, or word search games. Don’t limit yourself to one or two games…you won't know which game is your favorite until you try them all. So try something new and keep moving…just for the health of it!
