Volunteers Extraordinaire!
Remember the 80's TV show MacGyver where Richard Dean Anderson played Angus MacGyver, a different kind of hero: he didn't use weapons, and he was an expert at making complicated machines out of ordinary things. Well, Vicki D'Elia is our very own 21st Century female MacGyver! Her forte may not be machinery, but she really could survive in the desert for days with just a toothpick and a glue gun! Recently Vicki has put her talents to the task of developing ideas for a number of events including Del Webb Goes Pink, Caribbean Night, Halloween, USO Show and she is currently working diligently with eleven other devoted volunteers to ensure that "A Royal Affair" will provide a dazzling evening to those attending our New Year's Eve Party.
Vicki's enthusiasm and energy also spills over to her home. On any given day you can find her putting up a back splash, adding a light fixture, installing cabinets or painting a couple rooms! To most of us, that's a lot of work, but to Vicki, it's just Tuesday...
Thank you Vicki for being our MacGyver!

New & Improved Volunteer Program
New Opportunities for Resident Volunteers
Resident volunteers are the” heartbeat” and "life support” of activities at Sun City. Without our wonderful volunteers, it wouldn’t be possible to hold the many outstanding events we have.
We’re pleased to have a core group of volunteers for the upcoming 2011-2012 season but, although we’ve got some of our bases covered, we need to recruit quite a few more for the many exciting activities still on the drawing board.
The format for volunteering is new and improved. Instead of asking anyone to serve over a long period of time, we’ve created opportunities based on specific events. This should allow volunteers to focus on a single event, or more than one if so inclined and available.
Individuals who volunteer for a specific event will meet with Lifestyle staff to brainstorm ideas, suggest activities and décor to be featured and participate in the production of the event from start to finish.
Here are a few of the events that need more volunteers:
• Caribbean Night
• Chili Cook-Off
• Oktoberfest
• Halloween
• Valentine’s Day
• Thanksgiving
• New Year’s Eve
We have created some standing committees from which volunteers will be called for our less elaborate events not listed above, such as potlucks, movie nights, poolside activities and dances. These events don’t require as many volunteers or as much preparation, so if we have enough volunteers to draw from, volunteers won’t experience “Volunteer Burn Out!” These committees include:
• Post-Event Committee (returning the venue to its original condition)
• Kitchen Committee (assisting with event-related kitchen duties)
• Decorating Committee (setting the theme or mood of the event)
We know how precious your time is but we hope you’ll volunteer some of your time to support the needs outlined above. If you want to help make any of these events successful or wish to participate on any of the standing committees, please email the Lifestyle staff at suncityvolunteers@gmail.com. With your help we can create an even more exciting schedule of events and activities for all Sun City residents!
Naming Contest for Resident Volunteer Group
In conjunction with recruiting resident volunteers, a contest is underway to find an exciting and enticing name for the volunteer group. Put on your thinking caps and create a name that speaks to the spirit of volunteerism and has a catchy acronym to go with it. The reward may be small but the recognition will be great…we promise!!
